Narrative
Alexanders History and usage: Alexander is originally from Russia from Ukraine. It is also known under the synonyms Kejser Alexander, Aporta. Alexander is a seedling, formed 1700. Alexander has been known in Denmark since 1865. The variety is or has been grown occasionally in Denmark. Alexander was recommended for growing in Denmark latest in year 1951. Alexander is or has been suitable for growing in orchards/in gardens. The apple is a dessert/cider/culinary apple. Alexander grows at the Pometum. The tree: The tree has a vigorous, drooping/spreading growth. The yield is medium. The canopy density is fair. Alexander got in the years 1997 and 1999 evaluated under unsprayed conditions in southern Germany. Alexander got no scab on the apples, scab attack on a few leaves og mildew attack on approx. 25% of the shoots. The flower buds are mainly situated at young shoots. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is yellowish pink, the blossom is early. The flowers are medium sized with petals, that are touching each other. The variety is diploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 5. The quality and season of the apple: The season of the apple is medium early, to enjoy from September/Oktober. Alexander is mature for harvesting middle early (last part of September). The apple has only a little attractive appearance. The flesh is medium juicy with a medium sweetness, medium acidity and none or a weak aroma. The apple has a big tendency to be easily bruised. The overall flavour of Alexander is evaluated as medium good. The apple stores for a short time. The external of the apple: The apple is big to very big with a length of 77 mm and a diameter of 95 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is flat/flat-globose/flat-globose conical and a little asymmetrical. The groundcolour of the apple is greenish yellow. The covercolour is red. The covercolour covers approx. 50 % of the apple. It forms a flushed, striped and mottled. The surface of the skin is greasy. There are some lenticells. The lenticells are large. The colour of the lenticells appear brown in relation to the groundcolour and brown in relation to the covercolour. The stalk is long and thick, approx. 15 mm long and approx. 3,4 mm thick. The cavity is deep, with some russet. The basin is deep, and the eye is medium size and half open/open. The basin is none or very small ribbed. The internal of the apple: When you cut the apple from eye to stalk, you can see the following characteristics: The tube is conical/funnel-shaped and the stamens are inserted in the middle/at the base of the eye. The green lines around the core end at the base of the tube, but don´t touch each other/end at the margin of the tube/end at the middle of the tube. The core is onion shaped. If you cut the apple horizontally, the core will look half open. The diameter of the core is approx. 32mm. The core fill out approx. 0,34 of the cross cut of the whole apple. The pips are medium sized and brown. The skin is medium thick and the fruit flesh has a greenish colour. The flesh is medium firm
