Narrative
Femø Æbles History and usage
Femø Æble is seedling originally from Denmark, formed ca. 1850. It is also known under the synonyms Vallø reinet, Holstenhus. The variety is or has been grown rarely or not at all in Denmark. Femø Æble grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Maribo Museum/Gl. Estrup.
The tree:
The yield is high. The canopy density is fair. The cultivar is very robust towards apple scab, very robust towards apple mildew og sensitive towards apple canker. Femø Æble was evaluated under unsprayed conditions in the period of 2006-2009 . Femø Æble got scab attack on very few leaves, scab attack on only a few apples, fruit canker on almost half of the branches, no shoots with mildew, flyspeck/soothy blotch on approx. half of the fruits and no shoots with rosy apple aphid. The flower buds are mainly situated at young shoots. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is dark pink, the blossom is very late. The flowers are large with petals, that are overlapping. The variety is triploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 1/3/6.
The quality and season of the apple:
The season of the apple is medium early, to enjoy from September/Oktober. Femø Æble is mature for harvesting middle to late (first part of Oktober). The apple has an average attractive appearance. The flesh is medium juicy with a weak sweetness, medium acidity and much aroma. Smagsnoter af appelsin. The overall flavour of Femø Æble is evaluated as good. The apple stores for a short time.
The external of the apple
The apple is big to very big with a length of 72 mm and a diameter of 87 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is globose and symmetric. The groundcolour of the apple is greenish yellow. The covercolour is dark red. The covercolour covers approx. 25 % of the apple. It forms a a solid flush with weakly defined stripes. The surface of the skin is smooth. There are some lenticells. The lenticells are medium sized. The colour of the lenticells appear brown in relation to the groundcolour and brown in relation to the covercolour. The stalk is long and medium thick, approx. 14 mm long and approx. 2,6 mm thick. The cavity is medium deep, with some russet. The basin is a little ribbed.
