Kathrineæbles History and usage
Kathrineæble is a seedling formed 1850, it is originally from Denmark, central Jutland, Moesgård by the town Aarhus. It is also known under the synonyms Kathrineæble from Moesgård. The variety has been known in Denmark since 1913. The variety is or has been grown occasionally in Denmark. Kathrineæble was recommended for growing in Denmark latest in year 1919 and is or has been suitable for growing in orchards. Kathrineæble grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup.

The tree:
The yield is high/medium. The cultivar is very robust towards apple scab, very robust towards apple mildew og very robust towards apple cancer. Kathrineæble was evaluated under unsprayed conditions in the period of 2006-2009. Kathrineæble had no scab on the leaves, no scab attack on the apples, fruit cancer on only a few branches, no shoots with mildew, no fruits with flyspeck/soothy blotch and no shoots with rosy apple aphid. The flower buds are mainly situated at young shoots. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is yellowish pink, the blossom is early/in the middle of the season. The flowers are medium sized with petals, that are touching each other. The variety is diploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 11/20.

The quality and season of the apple:
The season of the apple is early, to enjoy from August. Kathrineæble is mature for harvesting very early (first part of August). The flesh is medium juicy with a medium sweetness, medium acidity and some aroma. The apple has only a small tendency to be easily bruised. The overall flavour of Kathrineæble is evaluated as medium good.

The apple is big The shape is flat-globose conical The groundcolour of the apple is green. The covercolour is red. The covercolour covers approx. 25 % of the apple. It forms a a weakly defined flush with strongly defined stripes. The surface of the skin is smooth. The basin is shallow, and the eye is medium size and closed.
