Narrative

Soesmark Æbles History and usage:
Soesmark Æble is a seedling of Early Victoria x Frogmore formed 1900, originally from Denmark, northeast Lolland, Soesmark. It has been known in Denmark since 1922. The variety is or has been grown rarely or not at all in Denmark. Soesmark Æble was recommended for growing in Denmark latest in year 1923. Soesmark Æble grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup.

The tree:
The cultivar is robust towards apple scab, sensitive towards apple mildew og very robust towards apple cancer. Soesmark Æble was evaluated under unsprayed conditions in the period of 2006-2009, Soesmark Æble had scab attack on approx. 25% of the leaves, no scab attack on the apples, no fruit cancer on the branches, mildew attack on almost half of the shoots, no fruits with flyspeck/soothy blotch and no shoots with rosy apple aphid. The flower buds are mainly situated at older branches. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is dark pink, the blossom is very late. The flowers are medium sized with petals, that are overlapping. The variety is diploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 3/4.

The quality and season of the apple:
The season of the apple is medium early, to enjoy from September/Oktober. Soesmark Æble is mature for harvesting early to middle (first part of September). The apple has more than an average attractive appearance. The flesh is dry with a weak sweetness, medium acidity and some aroma. The apple has a medium tendency to be easily bruised. The overall flavour of Soesmark Æble is evaluated as medium good.

The external of the apple:
The shape is flat-globose conical and symmetric. The basecolour of the apple is greenish yellow, the covercolour is orange. The covercolour covers approx. 50 % of the apple. It forms a a weakly defined flush with strongly defined stripes. The basin is medium deep, and the eye is medium size and closed.
