Maren Niss History and usage Maren Nis is originally from Denmark from the southern Denmark from Sønderjylland? It is also known under the synonyms Maren Nisses Æble. Maren Nis is a seedling, formed 1800. Maren Nis has been known in Denmark since 1915. The variety is or has been grown rarely or not at all in Denmark. Maren Nis was recommended for growing in Denmark latest in year 1939. Maren Nis is or has been suitable for growing in gardens. The apple is a dessert/culinary apple. Maren Nis grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup/Randers Regnskov/Blomstergårdens Pomet. The tree The cultivar is very robust towards apple scab, very robust towards apple mildew og very robust towards apple cancer. Maren Nis got in the period of 2006-2009 evaluated under unsprayed conditions. Maren Nis got no scab on the leaves, no scab attack on the apples, no fruit cancer on the branches, mildew attack on very few shoots, no fruits with flyspeck/soothy blotch and no shoots with rosy apple aphid. The flower buds are mainly situated at older branches. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is dark pink, the blossom is very late. The flowers are medium sized with petals, that are overlapping. The variety is diploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 3/5. The quality and season of the apple The season of the apple is medium early, to enjoy from September/Oktober. Maren Nis is mature for harvesting early (last part of August). The apple has an average attractive appearance. The flesh is dry with a medium sweetness, weak acidity and much aroma. The apple has a medium tendency to be easily bruised. The overall flavour of Maren Nis is evaluated as good. The apple stores for a short time. The external of the apple The apple is medium sized with a length of 73 mm and a diameter of 69 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is long-conical/ovate/oblong-conical and a little asymmetrical. The groundcolour of the apple is yellow. The covercolour is red. The covercolour covers approx. 75 % of the apple. It forms a a solid flush with strongly defined stripes. The surface of the skin is waxy. There are many lenticells. The lenticells are large. The basin is medium deep, and the eye is large and open. The basin is distinctly ribbed. The internal of the apple When you cut the apple from eye to stalk, you can see the following characteristics: The tube is funnel-shaped/conical and the stamens are inserted near the margin/in the middle of the eye. The green lines around the core end at the middle of the tube/end at the margin of the tube/end at the base of the tube, but don´t touch each other. The core is hearth shaped/ellipsoid. If you cut the apple horizontally, the core will look open. The diameter of the core is approx. 41mm. The core fill out approx. 0,59 of the cross cut of the whole apple. The skin is thin and the fruit flesh has a red striped colour. The flesh is soft with a fine texture. The flesh has a medium tendency to browning when cut.
