Marieæble fra Hjortholms History and usage Marieæble fra Hjortholm is originally from Denmark from Langeland from Hjortholm på Langeland It is also known under the synonyms Hjortholm Marieæble. Marieæble fra Hjortholm is a seedling, formed 1891. Marieæble fra Hjortholm has been known in Denmark since 1921. The variety is or has been grown rarely or not at all in Denmark. Marieæble fra Hjortholm was recommended for growing in Denmark latest in year 1951. Marieæble fra Hjortholm grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup. The tree The cultivar is very robust towards apple scab, very robust towards apple mildew og very robust towards apple cancer. Marieæble fra Hjortholm got in the period of 2006-2009 evaluated under unsprayed conditions. Marieæble fra Hjortholm got scab attack on very few leaves, scab attack on only a few apples, no fruit cancer on the branches, no shoots with mildew, no fruits with flyspeck/soothy blotch and no shoots with rosy apple aphid. The flower buds are mainly situated at older branches. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is yellowish pink, the blossom is early. The flowers are large with petals, that are overlapping. The variety is triploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 1/4/28. The quality and season of the apple The season of the apple is medium early, to enjoy from September/Oktober. Marieæble fra Hjortholm is mature for harvesting early to middle (first part of September). The apple has an average attractive appearance. The flesh is very juicy with a medium sweetness, weak acidity and none or a weak aroma. The apple has a medium tendency to be easily bruised. The overall flavour of Marieæble fra Hjortholm is evaluated as medium good. The external of the apple The apple is medium to big with a length of 60 mm and a diameter of 69 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is globose conical/conical and a little asymmetrical. The groundcolour of the apple is greenish yellow. The covercolour is red. The covercolour covers approx. 25 % of the apple. It forms a a weakly defined flush with strongly defined stripes. The surface of the skin is greasy. The lenticells are large. The colour of the lenticells appear white in relation to the groundcolour and white/brown in relation to the covercolour. The stalk is long and medium thick, approx. 14 mm long and approx. 2,3 mm thick. The cavity is medium deep, with some russet. The basin is deep, and the eye is medium size and half open/closed. The basin is a little ribbed. The internal of the apple When you cut the apple from eye to stalk, you can see the following characteristics: The tube is conical/funnel-shaped and the stamens are inserted in the middle of the eye. The green lines around the core end at the base of the tube, but don´t touch each other/end at the middle of the tube. The diameter of the core is approx. 25mm. The core fill out approx. 0,36 of the cross cut of the whole apple. The pips are medium sized and beige. The skin is thin and the fruit flesh has a yellowish colour. The flesh is medium firm with a medium fine texture
