Narrative
Markussens Æbles History and usage Markussens Æble is originally from Denmark from central Jutland from Besholt ved Horsens Markussens Æble is a seedling, formed 1800. Markussens Æble has been known in Denmark since 1909. The variety is or has been grown rarely or not at all in Denmark. Markussens Æble was recommended for growing in Denmark latest in year 1910. Markussens Æble grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup. The tree The cultivar is sensitive towards apple scab, very robust towards apple mildew og sensitive towards apple cancer. Markussens Æble got in the period of 2006-2009 evaluated under unsprayed conditions. Markussens Æble got scab attack on almost half of the leaves, scab attack on almost half of the apples, fruit cancer on a little more than half of the branches, no shoots with mildew, no fruits with flyspeck/soothy blotch and no shoots with rosy apple aphid. The flower buds are mainly situated at older branches. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is yellowish pink, the blossom is early. The flowers are medium sized with petals, that are overlapping. The variety is diploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 7/31. The quality and season of the apple The season of the apple is early, to enjoy from August. Markussens Æble is mature for harvesting very early (first part of August). The apple has only a little attractive appearance. The flesh is dry with a medium sweetness, weak acidity and much aroma. The apple has only a small tendency to be easily bruised. The overall flavour of Markussens Æble is evaluated as good. The external of the apple The apple is big The shape is ellipsoid and very asymmetrical. The groundcolour of the apple is greenish yellow. The covercolour is red. The covercolour covers approx. 75 % of the apple. It forms a a solid flush with strongly defined stripes/a weakly defined flush with strongly defined stripes. There are some lenticells. The lenticells are large. The internal of the apple When you cut the apple from eye to stalk, you can see the following characteristics: The tube is conical and the stamens are inserted at the base of the eye. The green lines around the core end at the base of the tube, but don´t touch each other. The skin is medium thick and the fruit flesh has a white colour. The flesh is medium firm with a course texture. The flesh has a medium tendency to browning when cut.
