Narrative

Marthas History and usage The variety is or has been grown rarely or not at all in Denmark. Martha grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup. The tree The cultivar is sensitive towards apple scab, very robust towards apple mildew og very robust towards apple cancer. Martha got in the period of 2006-2009 evaluated under unsprayed conditions. Martha got scab attack on approx. half of the leaves, scab attack on approx. half of the apples, no fruit cancer on the branches, no shoots with mildew, very few fruits with flyspeck/soothy blotch and no shoots with rosy apple aphid. The flower buds are mainly situated at young shoots. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is dark pink, the blossom is early/very early. The flowers are large with petals, that are free. The variety is diploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 1/28. The quality and season of the apple The season of the apple is early, to enjoy from August. Martha is mature for harvesting early (last part of August). The apple has more than an average attractive appearance. The flesh is very juicy with a medium sweetness, medium acidity and some aroma. The flesh has a bad distaste. The flesh has a bitter taste. The apple has a medium tendency to be easily bruised. The overall flavour of Martha is evaluated as medium good. The external of the apple The apple is very small to small with a length of 42 mm and a diameter of 44 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is globose conical/conical and a little asymmetrical. The groundcolour of the apple is yellow. The covercolour is red. The covercolour covers approx. 75 % of the apple. It forms a a solid flush with strongly defined stripes. The surface of the skin is smooth. There are only few/some lenticells. The lenticells are large. The colour of the lenticells appear brown in relation to the groundcolour and brown in relation to the covercolour. The stalk is medium size/long and thin, approx. 19 mm long and approx. 1,6 mm thick. The cavity is shallow, without russet. The basin is deep, and the eye is medium size and half open/open. The basin is a little ribbed. The internal of the apple When you cut the apple from eye to stalk, you can see the following characteristics: The tube is funnel-shaped/conical and the stamens are inserted near the margin of the eye. The green lines around the core end at the middle of the tube/end at the margin of the tube. The diameter of the core is approx. 17mm. The core fill out approx. 0,39 of the cross cut of the whole apple. The pips are medium sized and dark brown. The skin is thin and the fruit flesh has a greenish colour. The flesh is medium firm with a fine texture. The flesh has a strong tendency to browning when cut.
