Mathilde Æbles History and usage Mathilde Æble is originally from Denmark from Langeland from Rifbjerg på Langeland Mathilde Æble is a open pollinated, of Keswick Codlin x Bismarck formed 1913. Mathilde Æble has been known in Denmark since 1933. The variety is or has been grown occasionally in Denmark. Mathilde Æble was recommended for growing in Denmark latest in year 1951. Mathilde Æble is or has been suitable for growing in orchards. Mathilde Æble grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup. The tree The yield is high. The cultivar is very robust towards apple scab, very robust towards apple mildew og very robust towards apple cancer. Mathilde Æble got in the period of 2006-2009 evaluated under unsprayed conditions. Mathilde Æble got scab attack on very few leaves, scab attack on only a few apples, no fruit cancer on the branches, no shoots with mildew, flyspeck/soothy blotch on almost half of the fruits and no shoots with rosy apple aphid. The flower buds are mainly situated at young shoots/older branches. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is dark pink, the blossom is in the middle of the season. The flowers are medium sized with petals, that are touching each other. The variety is diploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 1/16b. The quality and season of the apple The season of the apple is medium early, to enjoy from September/Oktober. Mathilde Æble is mature for harvesting middle early (last part of September). The apple has more than an average attractive appearance. The flesh is very juicy with a weak sweetness, strong acidity and none or a weak aroma. The apple has a big tendency to be easily bruised. The overall flavour of Mathilde Æble is evaluated as not so good. The external of the apple The apple is big with a length of 74 mm and a diameter of 84 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is flat-globose conical and a little asymmetrical. The groundcolour of the apple is green. The covercolour is red. The covercolour covers approx. 75 % of the apple. It forms a a solid flush with strongly defined stripes. The surface of the skin is waxy. The colour of the lenticells appear white in relation to the groundcolour and white/lightbrown in relation to the covercolour. The stalk is very long and medium thick, approx. 21 mm long and approx. 2,8 mm thick. The cavity is deep, without russet. The basin is medium deep, and the eye is medium size and half open/open. The basin is a little ribbed. The internal of the apple When you cut the apple from eye to stalk, you can see the following characteristics: The tube is conical and the stamens are inserted in the middle of the eye. The green lines around the core end at the base of the tube, but don´t touch each other/end at the margin of the tube/end at the middle of the tube. The diameter of the core is approx. 29mm. The core fill out approx. 0,34 of the cross cut of the whole apple. The pips are medium sized and brown. The skin is medium thick and the fruit flesh has a greenish colour. The flesh is medium firm with a course texture.
