Spiseæble Vejles History and usage Spiseæble Vejle is originally from Denmark from the southern Denmark from Vejle Spiseæble Vejle is a seedling, of Cox Pomona x Skovfoged The variety is or has been grown rarely or not at all in Denmark. Spiseæble Vejle grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup. The tree The cultivar is very robust towards apple scab, very robust towards apple mildew og very robust towards apple cancer. Spiseæble Vejle got in the period of 2006-2009 evaluated under unsprayed conditions. Spiseæble Vejle got scab attack on very few leaves, no scab attack on the apples, fruit cancer on only a few branches, no shoots with mildew, very few fruits with flyspeck/soothy blotch and no shoots with rosy apple aphid. The flower buds are mainly situated at young shoots. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is purple, the blossom is in the middle of the season. The flowers are small with petals, that are overlapping. The variety is diploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 7/34. The quality and season of the apple The season of the apple is medium early, to enjoy from September/Oktober. Spiseæble Vejle is mature for harvesting middle to late (first part of Oktober). The apple has only a little attractive appearance. The flesh is dry with a strong sweetness, weak acidity and some aroma. Har lidt fad smag. The flesh has a bad distaste. The flesh has a bitter taste. The apple has a very big tendency to be easily bruised. The overall flavour of Spiseæble Vejle is evaluated as medium good. The apple stores for a short time. The external of the apple The apple is medium to big with a length of 54 mm and a diameter of 69 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is flat-globose and a little asymmetrical. There are cracks on the fruit. The groundcolour of the apple is green. The covercolour is dark red. The covercolour covers approx. 75 % of the apple. It forms a only a solid flush/a weakly defined flush with strongly defined stripes. The surface of the skin is smooth. There are some lenticells. The lenticells are medium sized. The colour of the lenticells appear greyish white in relation to the groundcolour and greyish white in relation to the covercolour. The stalk is medium size/long and thick, approx. 12 mm long and approx. 3,2 mm thick. The end of the stalk has a small fleshy knob. The stalk of the center fruit has often a fleshy knob in the cavity. The cavity is medium deep, with some russet. The basin is medium deep, and the eye is medium size and closed. The basin is a little ribbed. The internal of the apple When you cut the apple from eye to stalk, you can see the following characteristics: The core is obloid. If you cut the apple horizontally, the core will look half open. The diameter of the core is approx. 25mm. The core fill out approx. 0,37 of the cross cut of the whole apple. The pips are medium sized and brown. The skin is medium thick and the fruit flesh has a 1,6 colour. The flesh is soft with a fine texture. The flesh has a very strong tendency to browning when cut.
