Hjortholms History and usage Hjortholm is originally from Denmark from Langeland from herregården Hjortholm It is also known under the synonyms Hjortholm Marieæble. Hjortholm is a seedling, formed 1850. Hjortholm has been known in Denmark since 1850. The variety is or has been grown to some extent in Denmark. Hjortholm is or has been suitable for growing in orchards. The tree can also be used for landscaping. The apple is a dessert apple. Hjortholm grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup. The tree The yield is medium. The cultivar is robust towards apple scab, very robust towards apple mildew og very robust towards apple cancer. Hjortholm got in the period of 2006-2009 evaluated under unsprayed conditions. Hjortholm got scab attack on approx. 25% of the leaves, scab attack on only a few apples, no fruit cancer on the branches, mildew attack on very few shoots, flyspeck/soothy blotch on approx. 25 % fruits and no shoots with rosy apple aphid. The flower buds are mainly situated at young shoots. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is yellowish pink, the blossom is early. The flowers are large with petals, that are touching each other. The variety is triploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 1/4/28. The quality and season of the apple The season of the apple is medium early, to enjoy from September/Oktober. Hjortholm is mature for harvesting middle early (last part of September). The apple has a very attractive appearance. The flesh is medium juicy with a medium sweetness, medium acidity and much aroma. The overall flavour of Hjortholm is evaluated as very good. The apple stores for a short time. The external of the apple The apple is big with a length of 64 mm and a diameter of 80 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is flat and very asymmetrical. The groundcolour of the apple is whitish yellow. The covercolour is red. The covercolour covers approx. 50 % of the apple. It forms a a weakly defined flush with strongly defined stripes. The surface of the skin is smooth. There are only few lenticells. The lenticells are small. The colour of the lenticells appear red in relation to the groundcolour and brown in relation to the covercolour. The stalk is medium size and medium thick, approx. 10 mm long and approx. 2,9 mm thick. The cavity is medium deep, with some russet. The basin is medium deep/deep, and the eye is medium size and closed/half open. The basin is a little ribbed. The internal of the apple When you cut the apple from eye to stalk, you can see the following characteristics: The tube is conical/funnel-shaped and the stamens are inserted at the base/in the middle of the eye. The green lines around the core end at the base of the tube, but don´t touch each other. The core is obloid. If you cut the apple horizontally, the core will look open. The diameter of the core is approx. 27mm. The core fill out approx. 0,34 of the cross cut of the whole apple. The pips are medium sized and redbrown. The skin is medium thick and the fruit flesh has a white colour. The flesh has no tendency to browning when cut.
