Herschendsgaves History and usage Herschendsgave is originally from Denmark from central Jutland from Horsens Herschendsgave is a seedling, formed 1850. Herschendsgave has been known in Denmark since 1877. The variety is or has been grown rarely or not at all in Denmark. Herschendsgave was recommended for growing in Denmark latest in year 1951. Herschendsgave is or has been suitable for growing in orchards. Herschendsgave grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup/Blomstergårdens Pomet. The tree The yield is medium. The cultivar is robust towards apple scab, very robust towards apple mildew og very robust towards apple cancer. Herschendsgave got in the period of 2006-2009 evaluated under unsprayed conditions. Herschendsgave got scab attack on approx. 25% of the leaves, no scab attack on the apples, no fruit cancer on the branches, no shoots with mildew, no fruits with flyspeck/soothy blotch and no shoots with rosy apple aphid. The flower buds are mainly situated at young shoots. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is light pink, the blossom is in the middle of the season. The flowers are small with petals, that are free. The variety is diploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 9/40. The quality and season of the apple The season of the apple is medium early, to enjoy from September/Oktober. Herschendsgave is mature for harvesting middle early (last part of September). The apple has only a little attractive appearance. The flesh is very juicy with a medium sweetness, medium acidity and none or a weak aroma. The apple has a medium tendency to be easily bruised. The overall flavour of Herschendsgave is evaluated as medium good. The external of the apple The apple is small to medium with a length of 56 mm and a diameter of 58 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is globose conical/conical and a little asymmetrical. The groundcolour of the apple is greenish yellow. The covercolour is red. The covercolour covers approx. 25 % of the apple. It forms a a weakly defined flush with strongly defined stripes. The surface of the skin is waxy. The colour of the lenticells appear white in relation to the groundcolour and red in relation to the covercolour. Eventual rings around the lenticells appear light/green in relation to the groundcolour and light in relation to the covercolour. The stalk is long and medium thick, approx. 16 mm long and approx. 2,3 mm thick. The cavity is medium deep, without russet. The basin is shallow/medium deep, and the eye is medium size/small and closed/half open. The basin is a little ribbed. The internal of the apple When you cut the apple from eye to stalk, you can see the following characteristics: The tube is funnel-shaped and the stamens are inserted near the margin of the eye. The green lines around the core end at the margin of the tube. The diameter of the core is approx. 20mm. The core fill out approx. 0,34 of the cross cut of the whole apple. The pips are small and redbrown. The skin is thin and the fruit flesh has a greenish colour. The flesh is medium firm with a medium fine texture. The flesh has a strong tendency to browning when cut.
