Søbjergæbles History and usage Søbjergæble is originally from Denmark from Sealand from Søbjerg ved Høng Søbjergæble is a seedling, formed 1890. The variety is or has been grown rarely or not at all in Denmark. The apple is a culinary apple. Søbjergæble grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup. The tree The yield is medium. The cultivar is very robust towards apple scab, very robust towards apple mildew og very robust towards apple cancer. Søbjergæble got in the period of 2006-2009 evaluated under unsprayed conditions. Søbjergæble got scab attack on very few leaves, no scab attack on the apples, no fruit cancer on the branches, mildew attack on very few shoots, very few fruits with flyspeck/soothy blotch and no shoots with rosy apple aphid. The flower buds are mainly situated at young shoots/older branches. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is purple, the blossom is in the middle of the season. The flowers are medium sized with petals, that are overlapping. The variety is triploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 16b/28/33. The quality and season of the apple The season of the apple is medium early, to enjoy from September/Oktober. Søbjergæble is mature for harvesting early to middle (first part of September). The apple has an average attractive appearance. The flesh is very juicy with a medium sweetness, medium acidity and none or a weak aroma. Smager lidt af druer. The apple has only a small tendency to be easily bruised. The overall flavour of Søbjergæble is evaluated as medium good. The external of the apple The apple is big with a length of 71 mm and a diameter of 76 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is flat-globose conical and a little asymmetrical. The groundcolour of the apple is greenish yellow. The covercolour is red. The covercolour covers approx. 75 % of the apple. It forms a a solid flush with strongly defined stripes. The surface of the skin is smooth. The colour of the lenticells appear white in relation to the groundcolour and lightbrown in relation to the covercolour. The stalk is very short and thick, approx. 11 mm long and approx. 3,8 mm thick. The stalk is swollen. The cavity is medium deep, with some russet. The basin is medium deep/shallow, and the eye is medium size and closed/half open. The basin is distinctly ribbed. The internal of the apple When you cut the apple from eye to stalk, you can see the following characteristics: The tube is funnel-shaped/conical and the stamens are inserted in the middle/at the base of the eye. The green lines around the core end at the middle of the tube/end at the base of the tube, but don´t touch each other. The diameter of the core is approx. 25mm. The core fill out approx. 0,32 of the cross cut of the whole apple. The pips are medium sized and dark brown. The skin is medium thick and the fruit flesh has a yellowish colour. The flesh is hard with a course texture. The flesh has a strong tendency to browning when cut.
