Tyra Mathiesens History and usage Tyra Mathiesen is originally from Denmark from Sealand from Gundsømagle ved Roskilde Tyra Mathiesen is a seedling, formed 1830. Tyra Mathiesen has been known in Denmark since 1896. The variety is or has been grown rarely or not at all in Denmark. Tyra Mathiesen was recommended for growing in Denmark latest in year 1911. Tyra Mathiesen grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup. The tree The canopy density is poor. The cultivar is robust towards apple scab, sensitive towards apple mildew og very robust towards apple cancer. Tyra Mathiesen got in the period of 2006-2009 evaluated under unsprayed conditions. Tyra Mathiesen got scab attack on approx. 25% of the leaves, scab attack on only a few apples, no fruit cancer on the branches, mildew attack on almost half of the shoots, flyspeck/soothy blotch on approx. 25 % fruits and no shoots with rosy apple aphid. The flower buds are mainly situated at young shoots. The flowers are medium sized with petals, that are touching each other. The variety is diploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 1/11. The quality and season of the apple The season of the apple is medium early, to enjoy from September/Oktober. Tyra Mathiesen is mature for harvesting middle early (last part of September). The apple has more than an average attractive appearance. The flesh is very juicy with a medium sweetness, medium acidity and none or a weak aroma. The flesh has a bad distaste. The flesh has a bitter taste. The apple has a medium tendency to be easily bruised. The overall flavour of Tyra Mathiesen is evaluated as medium good. The external of the apple The apple is medium to big/medium sized with a length of 66 mm and a diameter of 74 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is flat-globose/flat-globose conical and symmetric/a little asymmetrical. The groundcolour of the apple is yellow/greenish yellow. The covercolour is dark red/purple. The covercolour covers approx. 75 % of the apple. It forms a a solid flush with weakly defined stripes/a solid flush with strongly defined stripes. The surface of the skin is greasy. There are some lenticells. The lenticells are medium sized/large. The colour of the lenticells appear light brown/white/brown in relation to the groundcolour and greyish white in relation to the covercolour. The stalk is long/medium size and thick, approx. 19 mm long and approx. 3 mm thick. The basin is medium deep, and the eye is small and open/half open/closed. The internal of the apple When you cut the apple from eye to stalk, you can see the following characteristics: The tube is funnel-shaped/conical and the stamens are inserted near the margin/at the base/in the middle of the eye. The green lines around the core end at the base of the tube, and touch each other/end at the base of the tube, but don´t touch each other/end at the middle of the tube. The core is hearth shaped. If you cut the apple horizontally, the core will look half open. The diameter of the core is approx. 24mm. The core fill out approx. 0,33 of the cross cut of the whole apple. The skin is medium thick and the fruit flesh has a greenish colour. The flesh is hard with a medium fine texture. The flesh has a weak tendency to browning when cut
