Tønness History and usage Tønnes is originally from Denmark from Funen from Kerteminde? Tønnes is a seedling, formed 1820. Tønnes has been known in Denmark since 1898. The variety is or has been grown occasionally in Denmark. Tønnes was recommended for growing in Denmark latest in year 1965. Tønnes is or has been suitable for growing in orchards/in gardens. The apple is a dessert/culinary/cider apple. Tønnes grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup/Blomstergårdens Pomet. The tree The tree has a vigorous, upright growth. The cultivar is robust towards apple scab, sensitive towards apple mildew og very robust towards apple cancer. Tønnes got in the period of 2006-2009 evaluated under unsprayed conditions. Tønnes got scab attack on approx. 25% of the leaves, scab attack on almost half of the apples, no fruit cancer on the branches, mildew attack on almost half of the shoots, flyspeck/soothy blotch on approx. 25 % fruits and no shoots with rosy apple aphid. The flower buds are mainly situated at older branches. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is purple, the blossom is in the middle of the season/late. The flowers are large with petals, that are overlapping. The variety is diploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 3/20. The quality and season of the apple The season of the apple is very late, to enjoy from January. Tønnes is mature for harvesting middle early (last part of September)/late (last part of Oktober). The apple has an average attractive appearance. The flesh is dry/medium juicy with a medium/a strong sweetness, medium acidity and none or a weak/some aroma. The apple has a medium/only a small tendency to be easily bruised. The overall flavour of Tønnes is evaluated as good. The apple stores for a very long time. The external of the apple The apple is medium to big with a length of 62/61/60 mm and a diameter of 68/67 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is globose conical/flat-globose conical/conical and a little asymmetrical/symmetric. The groundcolour of the apple is greenish yellow. The covercolour is pink/orange/red. The covercolour covers approx. 25 %/50 % of the apple. It forms a only stripes, no flush/a solid flush with weakly defined stripes. The surface of the skin is smooth. The lenticells are small. The colour of the lenticells appear green/greyish white in relation to the groundcolour and greyish white in relation to the covercolour. The stalk is long and medium thick, approx. 18/14/15 mm long and approx. 2,4/2,6/2,3 mm thick. The cavity is medium deep, with some/without russet. The basin is medium deep/shallow, and the eye is medium size and closed/half open. The basin is a little ribbed. The internal of the apple When you cut the apple from eye to stalk, you can see the following characteristics: The tube is funnel-shaped/conical and the stamens are inserted in the middle/near the margin/at the base of the eye. The green lines around the core end at the base of the tube, but don´t touch each other/end at the middle of the tube. The core is hearth shaped. If you cut the apple horizontally, the core will look closed/half open/open. The diameter of the core is approx. 27/28mm. The
