Vallekilde Æbles History and usage Vallekilde Æble is originally from Denmark from Sealand from Vallekilde i Odsherred Vallekilde Æble is a seedling, formed 1850. The variety is or has been grown rarely or not at all in Denmark. The apple is a dessert/culinary apple. Vallekilde Æble grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup/Blomstergårdens Pomet. The tree The yield is high/medium. The canopy density is fair. The cultivar is very robust towards apple scab, very robust towards apple mildew og very robust towards apple cancer. Vallekilde Æble got in the period of 2006-2009 evaluated under unsprayed conditions. Vallekilde Æble got scab attack on very few leaves, scab attack on only a few apples, no fruit cancer on the branches, mildew attack on very few shoots, flyspeck/soothy blotch on approx. 25 % fruits and no shoots with rosy apple aphid. The flower buds are mainly situated at older branches. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is purple, the blossom is in the middle of the season. The flowers are medium sized with petals, that are touching each other. The variety is diploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 1/7/?. The quality and season of the apple The season of the apple is medium early, to enjoy from September/Oktober. Vallekilde Æble is mature for harvesting middle early (last part of September). The apple has only a little attractive appearance. The flesh is very juicy with a medium sweetness, medium acidity and none or a weak aroma. The apple has a medium tendency to be easily bruised. The overall flavour of Vallekilde Æble is evaluated as good. The external of the apple The apple is big with a length of 67 mm and a diameter of 76 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is globose conical/conical and a little asymmetrical. The groundcolour of the apple is green. The covercolour is red. The covercolour covers approx. 25 % of the apple. It forms a a weakly defined flush with strongly defined stripes. The surface of the skin is smooth. The colour of the lenticells appear white/brown in relation to the groundcolour and white/lightbrown in relation to the covercolour. The stalk is long and medium thick, approx. 19 mm long and approx. 2,5 mm thick. The stalk is swollen. The cavity is medium deep, with a complete cover of russet. The basin is medium deep/deep, and the eye is large and half open/closed. The basin is a little ribbed. The internal of the apple When you cut the apple from eye to stalk, you can see the following characteristics: The tube is funnel-shaped/conical and the stamens are inserted in the middle of the eye. The green lines around the core end at the middle of the tube/end at the base of the tube, but don´t touch each other. The core is hearth shaped/ellipsoid. If you cut the apple horizontally, the core will look half open. The diameter of the core is approx. 28mm. The core fill out approx. 0,36 of the cross cut of the whole apple. The pips are medium sized and brown. The skin is thick and the fruit flesh has a greenish colour. The flesh is medium firm with a medium fine texture. The flesh has no tendency to browning when cut.
