Gråsten Mørkerøds History and usage Gråsten Mørkerød is originally from Denmark It is also known under the synonyms Gravensten, Gravensteiner, Graasten. Gråsten Mørkerød is a mutation, of Gråsten Gråsten Mørkerød has been known in Denmark since 1927. The variety is or has been grown occasionally in Denmark. Gråsten Mørkerød was recommended for growing in Denmark latest in year 1957. Gråsten Mørkerød is or has been suitable for growing in orchards. The apple is a dessert/culinary/cider apple. Gråsten Mørkerød grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup. The tree The tree has a vigorous, spreading growth. The cultivar is sensitive towards apple scab, robust towards apple mildew og robust towards apple cancer. The flower buds are mainly situated at older branches. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is light pink, the blossom is early. The flowers are large with petals, that are overlapping. The quality and season of the apple The season of the apple is medium early, to enjoy from September/Oktober. Gråsten Mørkerød is mature for harvesting early (last part of August). The apple has more than an average attractive appearance. The flesh is very juicy with a strong sweetness, medium acidity and some aroma. Sød eftersmag. The flesh has a bitter taste. The apple has a big tendency to be easily bruised. The overall flavour of Gråsten Mørkerød is evaluated as very good. The external of the apple The apple is medium to big with a length of 69 mm and a diameter of 74 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is oblong and a little asymmetrical. The groundcolour of the apple is green. The covercolour is dark red. The covercolour covers approx. 75 % of the apple. It forms a a weakly defined flush with strongly defined stripes. The surface of the skin is smooth/greasy. There are only few lenticells. The lenticells are medium sized. The colour of the lenticells appear dark green in relation to the groundcolour and redbrown in relation to the covercolour. The end of the stalk has a big fleshy knob. The stalk of the center fruit has often a fleshy knob in the cavity. The cavity is deep, without russet. The basin is deep, and the eye is large and closed. The basin is distinctly ribbed. The internal of the apple When you cut the apple from eye to stalk, you can see the following characteristics: The tube is conical/funnel-shaped and the stamens are inserted at the base/in the middle of the eye. The green lines around the core end at the base of the tube, but don´t touch each other/end at the middle of the tube. The core is ellipsoid. If you cut the apple horizontally, the core will look open. The diameter of the core is approx. 27mm. The core fill out approx. 0,36 of the cross cut of the whole apple. The pips are medium sized/few and underdeveloped or absent and brown. The skin is medium thick and the fruit flesh has a yellowish colour. The flesh is very firm with a course texture. The flesh has a medium tendency to browning when cut.
