Gråsten Guls History and usage Gråsten Gul is originally from Denmark from the southern Denmark from Graasten Slot It is also known under the synonyms Gravensten, Gravensteiner, Graasten. Gråsten Gul is a seedling, formed før 1696. Gråsten Gul has been known in Denmark since 1696. The variety is or has been grown widely in Denmark. Gråsten Gul was recommended for growing in Denmark latest in year 1984. Gråsten Gul is or has been suitable for growing in orchards. The apple is a dessert/culinary/cider apple. Gråsten Gul grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup/Randers Regnskov/Blomstergårdens Pomet. The tree The tree has a vigorous, spreading growth. The yield is low. The cultivar is very robust towards apple scab/sensitive towards apple scab, sensitive towards apple mildew og robust towards apple cancer. Gråsten Gul got in the years 1997 and 1999 evaluated under unsprayed conditions in southern Germany. Gråsten Gul got scab attack on a few apples, scab attack on a few leaves og mildew attack on almost half of the shoots. The flower buds are mainly situated at both young and older branches. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is light pink, the blossom is early. The flowers are large with petals, that are overlapping. The variety is triploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 4/20/11. The quality and season of the apple The season of the apple is medium early, to enjoy from September/Oktober. Gråsten Gul is mature for harvesting early to middle (first part of September)/middle early (last part of September). The apple has an average/more than an average attractive appearance. The flesh is very juicy with a medium/a strong sweetness, weak/medium acidity and some/much/none or a weak aroma. The apple has a medium tendency to be easily bruised. The overall flavour of Gråsten Gul is evaluated as very good/good. The apple stores for a medium time. The external of the apple The apple is big/medium to big with a length of 61/65 mm and a diameter of 70/69 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is flat/flat-globose/oblong and a little asymmetrical. The groundcolour of the apple is greenish yellow. The covercolour is red/dark red. The covercolour covers approx. 25 %/50 % of the apple. It forms a a weakly defined flush with strongly defined stripes. The surface of the skin is a little rough. There are some/many lenticells. The lenticells are medium sized/large. The colour of the lenticells appear green in relation to the groundcolour and brown in relation to the covercolour. The stalk is medium size and thick, approx. 11 mm long and approx. 3,3/3,6 mm thick. The cavity is medium deep/deep, with some russet. The basin is medium deep/shallow, and the eye is medium size and closed/half open. The basin is very distinctly ribbed. The internal of the apple When you cut the apple from eye to stalk, you can see the following characteristics: The tube is funnel-shaped/conical and the stamens are inserted in the middle of the eye. The green lines around the core end at the base of the tube, but don´t touch each other. The core is ellipsoid. If you cut the apple horizontally, the core will look open.
