Gråsten Blodrøds History and usage Gråsten Blodrød is originally from Denmark from Sealand from Holsteinborg ved Næstved It is also known under the synonyms Gravensten, Gravensteiner, Graasten. Gråsten Blodrød is a mutation, of Gråsten formed 1879. Gråsten Blodrød has been known in Denmark since 1896. The variety is or has been grown rarely or not at all in Denmark. Gråsten Blodrød was recommended for growing in Denmark latest in year 1936. Gråsten Blodrød is or has been suitable for growing in orchards. Gråsten Blodrød grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup. The tree The yield is medium. The cultivar is sensitive towards apple scab, robust towards apple mildew og sensitive towards apple cancer. The quality and season of the apple The season of the apple is medium early, to enjoy from September/Oktober. Gråsten Blodrød is mature for harvesting middle early (last part of September). The apple has more than an average attractive appearance. The flesh is very juicy with a medium sweetness, weak acidity and none or a weak aroma. Smagsnoter af appelsin. The overall flavour of Gråsten Blodrød is evaluated as good. The external of the apple The apple is big with a length of 73 mm and a diameter of 77 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is oblong and a little asymmetrical. The groundcolour of the apple is greenish yellow. The covercolour is dark red. The covercolour covers approx. 75 % of the apple. It forms a a weakly defined flush with strongly defined stripes/flushed, striped and mottled. The surface of the skin is a little rough. There are many lenticells. The lenticells are large. The colour of the lenticells appear green in relation to the groundcolour and brown in relation to the covercolour. The cavity is deep, with some russet. The basin is distinctly ribbed. The internal of the apple When you cut the apple from eye to stalk, you can see the following characteristics: The tube is conical and the stamens are inserted in the middle of the eye. The green lines around the core end at the base of the tube, but don´t touch each other. The core is hearth shaped. If you cut the apple horizontally, the core will look open. The diameter of the core is approx. 29mm. The core fill out approx. 0,38 of the cross cut of the whole apple. The pips are medium sized/few and underdeveloped or absent and brown. The skin is medium thick and the fruit flesh has a greenish colour. The flesh has a medium tendency to browning when cut.
