Gråsten 69-438s History and usage Gråsten 69-438 is originally from Denmark from Risø ved Roskilde Gråsten 69-438 is a mutation, of Graasten The variety is or has been grown rarely or not at all in Denmark. Gråsten 69-438 was recommended for growing in Denmark latest in year 1987. Gråsten 69-438 grows at the Pometum. The tree The variety is triploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 2/5/8. The quality and season of the apple The season of the apple is late, to enjoy from November/December. Gråsten 69-438 is mature for harvesting late (last part of Oktober). The apple has only a little attractive appearance. The flesh is dry with a weak sweetness, weak acidity and none or a weak aroma. Meget bitter og dårlig smag. The apple has only a small tendency to be easily bruised. The overall flavour of Gråsten 69-438 is evaluated as bad. The external of the apple The apple is medium to big with a length of 58 mm and a diameter of 70 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is flat-globose conical and a little asymmetrical. The groundcolour of the apple is green. The covercolour is dark red. The covercolour covers approx. 25 % of the apple. It forms a a weakly defined flush with strongly defined stripes. The surface of the skin is a little rough. There are many lenticells. The lenticells are large. The colour of the lenticells appear white in relation to the groundcolour and greyish white/yellow in relation to the covercolour. The stalk is medium size and thick, approx. 9 mm long and approx. 3,2 mm thick. The end of the stalk has a small fleshy knob. The stalk of the center fruit has often a fleshy knob in the cavity. The cavity is medium deep, with a complete cover of russet. The basin is deep, and the eye is large and half open/closed. The basin is fairly ribbed. The internal of the apple When you cut the apple from eye to stalk, you can see the following characteristics: The tube is conical and the stamens are inserted at the base/in the middle of the eye. The green lines around the core end at the base of the tube, but don´t touch each other/end at the margin of the tube. The core is onion shaped. If you cut the apple horizontally, the core will look closed. The diameter of the core is approx. 21mm. The core fill out approx. 0,30 of the cross cut of the whole apple. The pips are medium sized and brown. The skin is medium thick and the fruit flesh has a white colour. The flesh is hard with a course texture. The flesh has a very strong tendency to browning when cut.
