Gråmølles Æbles History and usage Gråmølles Æble is originally from England from Blenheim, Oxfordshire. It is also known under the synonyms Grå Mølles æble, Blenheim. Gråmølles Æble is a seedling, formed 1740. Gråmølles Æble has been known in Denmark since 1880. The variety is or has been grown rarely or not at all in Denmark. Gråmølles Æble is or has been suitable for growing in gardens. The apple is a culinary apple. Gråmølles Æble grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup/Randers Regnskov. The tree The yield is medium. The cultivar is robust towards apple scab, very robust towards apple mildew og sensitive towards apple cancer. Gråmølles Æble got in the period of 2006-2009 evaluated under unsprayed conditions. Gråmølles Æble got scab attack on approx. 25% of the leaves, scab attack on almost half of the apples, fruit cancer on almost half of the branches, mildew attack on very few shoots, no fruits with flyspeck/soothy blotch and no shoots with rosy apple aphid. The flower buds are mainly situated at older branches. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is purple, the blossom is in the middle of the season. The flowers are large with petals, that are touching each other. The variety is triploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 1/3/10. The quality and season of the apple The season of the apple is late, to enjoy from November/December. Gråmølles Æble is mature for harvesting middle to late (first part of Oktober). The apple has an average attractive appearance. The flesh is medium juicy with a medium sweetness, strong acidity and some aroma. The flesh has a bitter taste. The apple has only a small tendency to be easily bruised. The overall flavour of Gråmølles Æble is evaluated as medium good. The external of the apple The apple is big with a length of 69 mm and a diameter of 80 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is globose/flat-globose and a little asymmetrical. The groundcolour of the apple is greenish yellow. The covercolour is dark red. The covercolour covers approx. 25 % of the apple. It forms a a weakly defined flush with strongly defined stripes/only a solid flush. The surface of the skin is a little rough. There are many lenticells. The lenticells are large. The colour of the lenticells appear light brown in relation to the groundcolour and white in relation to the covercolour. The stalk is long and thick, approx. 15 mm long and approx. 3,2 mm thick. The end of the stalk has a very big fleshy knob. The cavity is medium deep, with some russet. The basin is deep/medium deep, and the eye is large and open. The basin is distinctly ribbed. The internal of the apple When you cut the apple from eye to stalk, you can see the following characteristics: The tube is funnel-shaped/conical and the stamens are inserted in the middle/near the margin/at the base of the eye. The green lines around the core end at the middle of the tube/end at the margin of the tube/end at the base of the tube, but don´t touch each other. The core is hearth shaped. If you cut the apple horizontally, the core will look open. The diameter of the core is approx. 24mm. The core fill out approx. 0,30 of the cross cut of the whole apple.
