Hans Wassards History and usage Hans Wassard is originally from Denmark from Sealand from Marienlyst ved Vordingborg Hans Wassard is a seedling, formed 1850. Hans Wassard has been known in Denmark since 1927. The variety is or has been grown rarely or not at all in Denmark. Hans Wassard was recommended for growing in Denmark latest in year 1928. The apple is a dessert/culinary apple. Hans Wassard grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup/Blomstergårdens Pomet. The tree The yield is medium. The cultivar is very robust towards apple scab, very robust towards apple mildew og very robust towards apple cancer. Hans Wassard got in the period of 2006-2009 evaluated under unsprayed conditions. Hans Wassard got no scab on the leaves, no scab attack on the apples, no fruit cancer on the branches, no shoots with mildew, no fruits with flyspeck/soothy blotch and no shoots with rosy apple aphid. The flower buds are mainly situated at both young and older branches. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is light pink, the blossom is in the middle of the season. The flowers are medium sized with petals, that are touching each other. The variety is triploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 3/7/?. The quality and season of the apple The season of the apple is very late, to enjoy from January. Hans Wassard is mature for harvesting middle to late (first part of Oktober). The apple has only a little attractive appearance. The flesh is dry with a medium sweetness, medium acidity and much aroma. The apple has only a small tendency to be easily bruised. The overall flavour of Hans Wassard is evaluated as medium good. The apple stores for a very long time. The external of the apple The apple is medium to big with a length of 87 mm and a diameter of 82 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is oblong/ellipsoid and a little asymmetrical. The groundcolour of the apple is green. The covercolour is purple. The covercolour covers approx. 25 % of the apple. It forms a a weakly defined flush with strongly defined stripes. There are only few/some lenticells. The lenticells are large. The colour of the lenticells appear brown in relation to the groundcolour and greyish white in relation to the covercolour. The basin is medium deep, and the eye is large and open. The internal of the apple When you cut the apple from eye to stalk, you can see the following characteristics: The tube is funnel-shaped/conical and the stamens are inserted in the middle/at the base of the eye. The green lines around the core end at the base of the tube, but don´t touch each other/end at the middle of the tube. The core is onion shaped/ellipsoid. If you cut the apple horizontally, the core will look open. The diameter of the core is approx. 39mm. The core fill out approx. 0,48 of the cross cut of the whole apple. The skin is thick and the fruit flesh has a greenish colour. The flesh is hard with a course texture. The flesh has a weak tendency to browning when cut.
