Pigeon Stribets History and usage Pigeon Stribet is originally from Denmark Pigeon Stribet is a seedling, The variety is or has been grown rarely or not at all in Denmark. Pigeon Stribet grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup/Blomstergårdens Pomet. The tree The cultivar is robust towards apple scab, very robust towards apple mildew og sensitive towards apple cancer. Pigeon Stribet got in the period of 2006-2009 evaluated under unsprayed conditions. Pigeon Stribet got scab attack on approx. 25% of the leaves, scab attack on only a few apples, fruit cancer on a little more than half of the branches, mildew attack on very few shoots, very few fruits with flyspeck/soothy blotch and no shoots with rosy apple aphid. The flower buds are mainly situated at older branches. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is yellowish pink, the blossom is very late. The flowers are medium sized with petals, that are touching each other. The variety is diploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 7/10. The quality and season of the apple The season of the apple is medium early, to enjoy from September/Oktober. Pigeon Stribet is mature for harvesting early to middle (first part of September). The apple has an average attractive appearance. The flesh is medium juicy with a weak sweetness, weak acidity and some aroma. The apple has only a small tendency to be easily bruised. The overall flavour of Pigeon Stribet is evaluated as medium good. The external of the apple The apple is small with a length of 53 mm and a diameter of 52 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is long-conical/ovate/oblong-conical and a little asymmetrical. The groundcolour of the apple is green. The covercolour is purple. The covercolour covers approx. 50 % of the apple. It forms a a weakly defined flush with strongly defined stripes/a solid flush with strongly defined stripes. The surface of the skin is smooth. There are some lenticells. The lenticells are large. The stalk is medium size/long and medium thick, approx. 17 mm long and approx. 2,3 mm thick. The cavity is medium deep, with some russet. The basin is shallow, and the eye is medium size and half open. The basin is a little ribbed. The internal of the apple When you cut the apple from eye to stalk, you can see the following characteristics: The tube is funnel-shaped/conical and the stamens are inserted in the middle/near the margin of the eye. The green lines around the core end at the middle of the tube/end at the margin of the tube/end at the base of the tube, but don´t touch each other. The core is onion shaped. If you cut the apple horizontally, the core will look open/half open/closed. The diameter of the core is approx. 24mm. The core fill out approx. 0,46 of the cross cut of the whole apple. The pips are small and dark brown. The skin is thin and the fruit flesh has a greenish colour. The flesh is soft with a fine texture. The flesh has a strong tendency to browning when cut.
