Narrative
Pigeon Spejlsbys History and usage Pigeon Spejlsby is originally from Denmark from Møn from Spejlsby It is also known under the synonyms Spejlsbyæble. Pigeon Spejlsby is a seedling, formed 1850. The variety is or has been grown rarely or not at all in Denmark. The apple is a dessert apple. Pigeon Spejlsby grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup. The tree The cultivar is sensitive towards apple scab, very robust towards apple mildew og sensitive towards apple cancer. Pigeon Spejlsby got in the period of 2006-2009 evaluated under unsprayed conditions. Pigeon Spejlsby got scab attack on almost half of the leaves, scab attack on almost half of the apples, fruit cancer on approx. half of the branches, mildew attack on very few shoots, no fruits with flyspeck/soothy blotch and no shoots with rosy apple aphid. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is yellowish pink, the blossom is early. The flowers are medium sized with petals, that are overlapping. The variety is diploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 7/10. The quality and season of the apple The season of the apple is medium early, to enjoy from September/Oktober. Pigeon Spejlsby is mature for harvesting middle early (last part of September)/early to middle (first part of September). The apple has more than an average/an average attractive appearance. The flesh is medium juicy/dry with a weak/a medium sweetness, medium/weak acidity and some/none or a weak aroma. The flesh has a bad distaste. The flesh has a bitter taste. The apple has only a small/a big tendency to be easily bruised. The overall flavour of Pigeon Spejlsby is evaluated as bad/good. The external of the apple The apple is small with a length of 52/51 mm and a diameter of 52/51 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is long-conical/ovate/oblong-conical/globose conical/conical and a little asymmetrical/symmetric. The groundcolour of the apple is greenish yellow/green. The covercolour is red. The covercolour covers approx. 75 % of the apple. It forms a a solid flush with weakly defined stripes. The surface of the skin is smooth. There are some lenticells. The lenticells are medium sized. The colour of the lenticells appear light brown/brown in relation to the groundcolour and white/lightbrown/greyish white in relation to the covercolour. The stalk is medium size/long/very long and medium thick, approx. 22/18 mm long and approx. 2,2/2,1 mm thick. The cavity is medium deep/shallow, with some russet. The basin is shallow, and the eye is large/medium size and closed/half open. The basin is a little ribbed. The internal of the apple When you cut the apple from eye to stalk, you can see the following characteristics: The tube is funnel-shaped and the stamens are inserted near the margin/in the middle of the eye. The green lines around the core end at the middle of the tube/end at the margin of the tube. The core is onion shaped. If you cut the apple horizontally, the core will look half open/closed. The diameter of the core is approx. 24/22mm. The core fill out approx. 0,46/0,44 of the cross cut of the whole apple. The pips are medium sized and dark brown. The skin is thick/thin and the fruit flesh has a greenish/white colour. The flesh is medium firm/soft with a medium fine/fine
