Pigeon Rød Vinters History and usage Pigeon Rød Vinter is originally from Denmark Pigeon Rød Vinter is a seedling, Pigeon Rød Vinter has been known in Denmark since 1882. The variety is or has been grown rarely or not at all in Denmark. Pigeon Rød Vinter was recommended for growing in Denmark latest in year 1928. Pigeon Rød Vinter is or has been suitable for growing in orchards. Pigeon Rød Vinter grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup/Blomstergårdens Pomet. The tree The cultivar is very robust towards apple scab, very robust towards apple mildew og very robust towards apple cancer. Pigeon Rød Vinter got in the period of 2006-2009 evaluated under unsprayed conditions. Pigeon Rød Vinter got no scab on the leaves, no scab attack on the apples, fruit cancer on only a few branches, no shoots with mildew, very few fruits with flyspeck/soothy blotch and no shoots with rosy apple aphid. The flower buds are mainly situated at young shoots. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is yellowish pink, the blossom is very late. The flowers are medium sized with petals, that are touching each other. The variety is diploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 3/7. The quality and season of the apple The season of the apple is medium early, to enjoy from September/Oktober. Pigeon Rød Vinter is mature for harvesting early to middle (first part of September). The apple has an average attractive appearance. The flesh is very juicy with a weak sweetness, medium acidity and none or a weak aroma. The flesh has a bitter taste. The apple has only a small tendency to be easily bruised. The overall flavour of Pigeon Rød Vinter is evaluated as not so good. The external of the apple The apple is medium to big with a length of 75 mm and a diameter of 66 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is intermediate conical and a little asymmetrical. The groundcolour of the apple is greenish yellow. The covercolour is red. The covercolour covers approx. 75 % of the apple. It forms a a weakly defined flush with strongly defined stripes. The surface of the skin is smooth. There are many lenticells. The lenticells are large. The colour of the lenticells appear brown in relation to the groundcolour and lightbrown in relation to the covercolour. Eventual rings around the lenticells appear brown in relation to the groundcolour and purple in relation to the covercolour. The stalk is short/medium size and medium thick, approx. 10 mm long and approx. 2,8 mm thick. The cavity is medium deep, with some russet. The basin is shallow, and the eye is medium size and half open. The basin is fairly ribbed. The internal of the apple When you cut the apple from eye to stalk, you can see the following characteristics: The tube is funnel-shaped/conical and the stamens are inserted in the middle/at the base of the eye. The green lines around the core end at the middle of the tube/end at the margin of the tube/end at the base of the tube, but don´t touch each other. The core is onion shaped. If you cut the apple horizontally, the core will look half open/open. The diameter of the core is approx. 23mm. The core fill out approx. 0,35 of the cross cut of the whole apple. The pips are medium sized and dark brown. The skin is medium thick and the fruit flesh has a yellowish colour. The flesh is soft with a fine texture. The flesh has no tendency to browning when cut.
