Ejby æbles History and usage Ejby æble is originally from Denmark from Funen from Vestfyn It is also known under the synonyms Rødt sommeræble fra Baaring. Ejby æble is a seedling, of Transparente rouge x ? formed 1840. Ejby æble has been known in Denmark since 1936. The variety is or has been grown rarely or not at all in Denmark. Ejby æble was recommended for growing in Denmark latest in year 1957. The apple is a dessert apple. Ejby æble grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup. The tree The cultivar is robust towards apple scab, sensitive towards apple mildew og very robust towards apple cancer. Ejby æble got in the period of 2006-2009 evaluated under unsprayed conditions. Ejby æble got scab attack on approx. 25% of the leaves, no scab attack on the apples, no fruit cancer on the branches, mildew attack on almost half of the shoots, no fruits with flyspeck/soothy blotch and no shoots with rosy apple aphid. The flower buds are mainly situated at both young and older branches. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is yellowish pink, the blossom is early. The flowers are medium sized with petals, that are touching each other. The variety is diploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 6/8. The quality and season of the apple The season of the apple is early, to enjoy from August. Ejby æble is mature for harvesting early (last part of August). The apple has only a little attractive appearance. The flesh is medium juicy with a medium sweetness, weak acidity and none or a weak aroma. The overall flavour of Ejby æble is evaluated as not so good. The external of the apple The apple is small with a length of 52 mm and a diameter of 54 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is ellipsoid and a little asymmetrical. The groundcolour of the apple is green. The covercolour is redbrown. The covercolour covers approx. 75 % of the apple. It forms a a solid flush with strongly defined stripes. The surface of the skin is greasy. There are some lenticells. The lenticells are medium sized. The colour of the lenticells appear brown in relation to the groundcolour and brown in relation to the covercolour. The cavity is medium deep, without russet. The basin is shallow, and the eye is large and closed. The basin is a little ribbed. The internal of the apple When you cut the apple from eye to stalk, you can see the following characteristics: The core is onion shaped. If you cut the apple horizontally, the core will look half open. The diameter of the core is approx. 22mm. The core fill out approx. 0,40 of the cross cut of the whole apple. The pips are medium sized and brown. The skin is thin and the fruit flesh has a greenish colour. The flesh has no tendency to browning when cut.
