Gråsten Røds History and usage Gråsten Rød is originally from Germany from Lübeck. It is also known under the synonyms Rød Gråsten, Gravensten, Gravensteiner, Graasten. Gråsten Rød is a mutation, of Gråsten formed før 1875. Gråsten Rød has been known in Denmark since 1896. The variety is or has been grown widely in Denmark. Gråsten Rød was recommended for growing in Denmark latest in year 2006. Gråsten Rød is or has been suitable for growing in orchards. The apple is a dessert/culinary/cider apple. Gråsten Rød grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup/Blomstergårdens Pomet. The tree The tree has a vigorous, spreading growth. The yield is medium. The cultivar is sensitive towards apple scab, sensitive towards apple mildew/very robust towards apple mildew og very robust towards apple cancer. Gråsten Rød got in the period of 2006-2009 evaluated under unsprayed conditions. Gråsten Rød got scab attack on almost half of the leaves, scab attack on approx. 25% of the apples, fruit cancer on only a few branches, mildew attack on very few shoots, no fruits with flyspeck/soothy blotch and no shoots with rosy apple aphid. Gråsten Rød got in the years 1997 and 1999 evaluated under unsprayed conditions in southern Germany. Gråsten Rød got scab attack on approx. 25% of the apples, scab attack on about half of the leaves og mildew attack on approx. half of the shoots. The flower buds are mainly situated at older branches. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is light pink, the blossom is early. The flowers are large with petals, that are overlapping. The quality and season of the apple The season of the apple is medium early, to enjoy from September/Oktober. Gråsten Rød is mature for harvesting early to middle (first part of September). The apple has an average attractive appearance. The flesh is very juicy with a medium sweetness, weak acidity and none or a weak aroma. The apple has only a small tendency to be easily bruised. The overall flavour of Gråsten Rød is evaluated as medium good/good. The apple stores for a medium time.
