Elmelunds History and usage Elmelund is originally from Denmark from Funen from Elmelund ved Odense It is also known under the synonyms Elmelundsæble. Elmelund is a seedling, formed 1830. Elmelund has been known in Denmark since 1904. The variety is or has been grown to some extent in Denmark. Elmelund was recommended for growing in Denmark latest in year 1951. Elmelund is or has been suitable for growing in orchards/in gardens. The apple is a dessert/culinary apple. Elmelund grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup/Blomstergårdens Pomet. The tree The tree has a vigorous, spreading growth. The cultivar is very robust towards apple scab, very robust towards apple mildew og very robust towards apple cancer. Elmelund got in the period of 2006-2009 evaluated under unsprayed conditions. Elmelund got scab attack on very few leaves, scab attack on only a few apples, no fruit cancer on the branches, no shoots with mildew, no fruits with flyspeck/soothy blotch and no shoots with rosy apple aphid. The flower buds are mainly situated at older branches. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is light pink, the blossom is in the middle of the season. The flowers are medium sized with petals, that are touching each other. The variety is diploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 1/20. The quality and season of the apple The season of the apple is late, to enjoy from November/December/medium early, to enjoy from September/Oktober. Elmelund is mature for harvesting middle early (last part of September). The apple has an average attractive appearance. The flesh is very juicy with a medium sweetness, medium acidity and none or a weak aroma. Smager af ananas. The apple has a medium tendency to be easily bruised. The overall flavour of Elmelund is evaluated as medium good. The apple stores for a medium time. The external of the apple The apple is medium to big with a length of 66 mm and a diameter of 69 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is globose and a little asymmetrical. The groundcolour of the apple is green. The covercolour is red. The covercolour covers approx. 50 % of the apple. It forms a flushed, striped and mottled. The surface of the skin is greasy. The colour of the lenticells appear white in relation to the groundcolour and lightbrown in relation to the covercolour. The stalk is long and medium thick, approx. 14 mm long and approx. 2,8 mm thick. The cavity is medium deep, with some russet. The basin is medium deep, and the eye is large/small and closed. The basin is a little ribbed. The internal of the apple When you cut the apple from eye to stalk, you can see the following characteristics: The tube is funnel-shaped/conical and the stamens are inserted at the base/in the middle of the eye. The green lines around the core end at the middle of the tube/end at the base of the tube, but don´t touch each other. The core is hearth shaped. If you cut the apple horizontally, the core will look open. The diameter of the core is approx. 35mm. The core fill out approx. 0,50 of the cross cut of the whole apple. The pips are large and redbrown.
