Jølbyæbles History and usage
Jølbyæble is a seedling originally from Denmark, Mors, Jølby. It has been known in Denmark since 1938. The variety is or has been grown rarely or not at all in Denmark. Jølbyæble grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup.

The tree:
The cultivar is robust towards apple scab, robust towards apple mildew og very robust towards apple cancer. Jølbyæble was evaluated under unsprayed conditions in the period of 2006-2009. Jølbyæble had scab attack on approx. 25% of the leaves, scab attack on only a few apples, fruit cancer on only a few branches, mildew attack on approx. 25% of the shoots, very few fruits with flyspeck/soothy blotch and no shoots with rosy apple aphid. The flower buds are mainly situated at both young and older branches. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is yellowish pink/light pink, the blossom is early. The flowers are medium sized with petals, that are touching each other. The variety is diploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 4/?.

The quality and season of the apple:
The season of the apple is medium early, to enjoy from September/Oktober. Jølbyæble is mature for harvesting early to middle (first part of September). The apple has only a little attractive appearance. The flesh is medium juicy with a weak sweetness, medium acidity and none or a weak aroma. The apple has a medium tendency to be easily bruised. The overall flavour of Jølbyæble is evaluated as not so good.

The external of the apple:
The apple is medium to big with a length of 62 mm and a diameter of 73 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is flat-globose conical and a little asymmetrical. The groundcolour of the apple is greenish yellow. The covercolour is red. The covercolour covers approx. 50 % of the apple. It forms a a solid flush with strongly defined stripes/a weakly defined flush with strongly defined stripes. The surface of the skin is greasy. The colour of the lenticells appear brown in relation to the basecolour and brown in relation to the covercolour. Eventual rings around the lenticells appear light/green in relation to the groundcolour and red in relation to the covercolour. The stalk is long and medium thick, approx. 16 mm long and approx. 2,8 mm thick. The cavity is deep, with some russet. The basin is medium deep, and the eye is large and closed. The basin is a little ribbed.
