Niels Juuls History and usage Niels Juul is originally from Denmark from the capitol region from Glostrup ved København Niels Juul is a seedling, of Borgherre x ? formed 1875. Niels Juul has been known in Denmark since 1888. The variety is or has been grown occasionally in Denmark. Niels Juul was recommended for growing in Denmark latest in year 1946. Niels Juul is or has been suitable for growing in orchards. The apple is a dessert/culinary apple. Niels Juul grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup/Blomstergårdens Pomet. The tree The yield is medium. The cultivar is very robust towards apple scab, very robust towards apple mildew og very robust towards apple cancer. Niels Juul got in the period of 2006-2009 evaluated under unsprayed conditions. Niels Juul got scab attack on very few leaves, scab attack on only a few apples, no fruit cancer on the branches, mildew attack on very few shoots, flyspeck/soothy blotch on approx. 25 % fruits and no shoots with rosy apple aphid. The flower buds are mainly situated at young shoots. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is dark pink, the blossom is in the middle of the season. The flowers are medium sized with petals, that are touching each other. The variety is triploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 1/5/7. The quality and season of the apple The season of the apple is late, to enjoy from November/December. Niels Juul is mature for harvesting middle early (last part of September). The apple has only a little attractive appearance. The flesh is medium juicy with a weak sweetness, medium acidity and none or a weak aroma. The apple has only a small tendency to be easily bruised. The overall flavour of Niels Juul is evaluated as not so good. The external of the apple The apple is big with a length of 66 mm and a diameter of 77 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is globose and a little asymmetrical. The groundcolour of the apple is greenish yellow. The covercolour is orange. The covercolour covers approx. 25 % of the apple. It forms a a weakly defined flush with strongly defined stripes. The surface of the skin is russeted. The colour of the lenticells appear brown in relation to the groundcolour and brown in relation to the covercolour. The stalk is long and medium thick, approx. 15 mm long and approx. 2,7 mm thick. The cavity is deep, with some russet. The basin is deep, and the eye is medium size/1 and open/half open/closed. The basin is a little ribbed. The internal of the apple When you cut the apple from eye to stalk, you can see the following characteristics: The tube is conical/3 and the stamens are inserted in the middle of the eye. The green lines around the core end at the base of the tube, but don´t touch each other/end at the middle of the tube. The diameter of the core is approx. 27mm. The core fill out approx. 0,35 of the cross cut of the whole apple. The pips are medium sized and brown. The skin is medium thick and the fruit flesh has a greenish colour. The flesh is hard with a course texture.
