Niels Olsens Æbles History and usage Niels Olsens Æble is originally from Denmark The variety is or has been grown rarely or not at all in Denmark. Niels Olsens Æble is or has been suitable for growing in orchards. The apple is a dessert apple. Niels Olsens Æble grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup. The tree The yield is medium. The canopy density is fair. The cultivar is very robust towards apple scab, very robust towards apple mildew og very robust towards apple cancer. Niels Olsens Æble got in the period of 2006-2009 evaluated under unsprayed conditions. Niels Olsens Æble got scab attack on very few leaves, no scab attack on the apples, no fruit cancer on the branches, mildew attack on very few shoots, flyspeck/soothy blotch on approx. 25 % fruits and no shoots with rosy apple aphid. The flower buds are mainly situated at young shoots. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is yellowish pink, the blossom is very late. The flowers are medium sized with petals, that are touching each other. The variety is diploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 1/7. The quality and season of the apple The season of the apple is medium early, to enjoy from September/Oktober. Niels Olsens Æble is mature for harvesting middle early (last part of September). The apple has an average attractive appearance. The flesh is medium juicy with a medium sweetness, medium acidity and much aroma. The overall flavour of Niels Olsens Æble is evaluated as bad. The apple stores for a medium time. The external of the apple The apple is medium to big with a length of 62 mm and a diameter of 73 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is intermediate conical and symmetric. The groundcolour of the apple is greenish yellow. The covercolour is red. The covercolour covers approx. 25 % of the apple. It forms a a solid flush with strongly defined stripes/a weakly defined flush with strongly defined stripes. The surface of the skin is smooth. There are some lenticells. The lenticells are large. The colour of the lenticells appear white/light brown in relation to the groundcolour and brown in relation to the covercolour. The stalk is medium size and thick, approx. 11 mm long and approx. 3,4 mm thick. The stalk of the center fruit has often a fleshy knob in the cavity. The cavity is medium deep, with some russet. The basin is distinctly ribbed. The internal of the apple When you cut the apple from eye to stalk, you can see the following characteristics: The tube is funnel-shaped/conical and the stamens are inserted in the middle of the eye. The green lines around the core end at the middle of the tube/end at the margin of the tube. The core is onion shaped. If you cut the apple horizontally, the core will look half open. The diameter of the core is approx. 24mm. The core fill out approx. 0,33 of the cross cut of the whole apple. The pips are medium sized and brown. The skin is thick and the fruit flesh has a white colour. The flesh has a weak tendency to browning when cut.
