Guldborg Røds History and usage Guldborg Rød is originally from Denmark It is also known under the synonyms Rød Guldborg. Guldborg Rød is a mutation, of Guldborg Guldborg Rød has been known in Denmark since 1954. The variety is or has been grown widely in Denmark. Guldborg Rød was recommended for growing in Denmark latest in year 1958. Guldborg Rød is or has been suitable for growing in orchards/in gardens. The apple is a dessert apple. Guldborg Rød grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup. The tree The tree has a weak, spreading growth. The cultivar is sensitive towards apple scab, very robust towards apple mildew og robust towards apple cancer. Guldborg Rød got in the period of 2006-2009 evaluated under unsprayed conditions. Guldborg Rød got scab attack on almost half of the leaves, scab attack on only a few apples, fruit cancer on approx. 25% of the branches, mildew attack on very few shoots, no fruits with flyspeck/soothy blotch and no shoots with rosy apple aphid. The flower buds are mainly situated at both young and older branches. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is dark pink/purple, the blossom is in the middle of the season. The flowers are medium sized with petals, that are touching each other. The variety is diploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 3/11. The quality and season of the apple The season of the apple is early, to enjoy from August. Guldborg Rød is mature for harvesting early (last part of August). The apple has more than an average attractive appearance. The flesh is very juicy with a medium sweetness, medium acidity and much aroma. The apple has only a small tendency to be easily bruised. The overall flavour of Guldborg Rød is evaluated as good. The apple stores for a short time. The external of the apple The apple is medium to big with a length of 63 mm and a diameter of 66 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is globose conical/conical and a little asymmetrical. The groundcolour of the apple is greenish yellow. The covercolour is red. The covercolour covers approx. 75 % of the apple. It forms a a solid flush with strongly defined stripes/a weakly defined flush with strongly defined stripes. The surface of the skin is smooth. The colour of the lenticells appear white/light brown in relation to the groundcolour and white in relation to the covercolour. Eventual rings around the lenticells appear green in relation to the groundcolour and red in relation to the covercolour. The stalk is medium size and thick, approx. 11 mm long and approx. 3,7 mm thick. The stalk is swollen. The cavity is medium deep, with some russet. The basin is medium deep, and the eye is large and half open. The basin is a little ribbed.
