Højbjerg Sommeræbles History and usage Højbjerg Sommeræble is originally from Denmark Højbjerg Sommeræble is a seedling, The variety is or has been grown rarely or not at all in Denmark. Højbjerg Sommeræble grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup. The tree The cultivar is sensitive towards apple scab, very robust towards apple mildew og very robust towards apple cancer. Højbjerg Sommeræble got in the period of 2006-2009 evaluated under unsprayed conditions. Højbjerg Sommeræble got scab attack on almost half of the leaves, no scab attack on the apples, no fruit cancer on the branches, mildew attack on very few shoots, no fruits with flyspeck/soothy blotch and no shoots with rosy apple aphid. The flower buds are mainly situated at young shoots. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is light pink, the blossom is in the middle of the season. The flowers are large with petals, that are free. The quality and season of the apple The season of the apple is early, to enjoy from August. Højbjerg Sommeræble is mature for harvesting early (last part of August). The apple has an average attractive appearance. The flesh is medium juicy with a medium sweetness, strong acidity and none or a weak aroma. The apple has a medium tendency to be easily bruised. The overall flavour of Højbjerg Sommeræble is evaluated as not so good. The external of the apple The apple is medium to big with a length of 58 mm and a diameter of 72 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is flat-globose conical and a little asymmetrical. The groundcolour of the apple is greenish yellow. The covercolour covers approx. 25 %/0 % of the apple. The surface of the skin is smooth. The stalk is very long and medium thick, approx. 20 mm long and approx. 2,1 mm thick. The cavity is shallow, without russet. The basin is a little ribbed. The internal of the apple When you cut the apple from eye to stalk, you can see the following characteristics: The tube is conical/funnel-shaped and the stamens are inserted in the middle/at the base of the eye. The green lines around the core end at the middle of the tube. The diameter of the core is approx. 21mm. The core fill out approx. 0,38 of the cross cut of the whole apple. The pips are medium sized and brown. The skin is medium thick and the fruit flesh has a white colour. The flesh is medium firm with a medium fine texture. The flesh has a medium tendency to browning when cut.
