Højbjerg Kalvils History and usage Højbjerg Kalvil is originally from Denmark from central Jutland from Højbjerg ved Aarhus Højbjerg Kalvil is a seedling, formed 1810. The variety is or has been grown rarely or not at all in Denmark. Højbjerg Kalvil grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup/Randers Regnskov. The tree The yield is medium. The cultivar is very robust towards apple scab, very robust towards apple mildew og very robust towards apple cancer. Højbjerg Kalvil got in the period of 2006-2009 evaluated under unsprayed conditions. Højbjerg Kalvil got scab attack on very few leaves, no scab attack on the apples, no fruit cancer on the branches, mildew attack on very few shoots, no fruits with flyspeck/soothy blotch and no shoots with rosy apple aphid. The flower buds are mainly situated at young shoots. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is light pink, the blossom is in the middle of the season/early. The flowers are medium sized with petals, that are free. The variety is diploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 20/24. The quality and season of the apple The season of the apple is medium early, to enjoy from September/Oktober. Højbjerg Kalvil is mature for harvesting early to middle (first part of September). The apple has more than an average attractive appearance. The flesh is medium juicy with a medium sweetness, weak acidity and much aroma. The apple has only a small tendency to be easily bruised. The overall flavour of Højbjerg Kalvil is evaluated as good. The external of the apple The apple is small to medium with a length of 69 mm and a diameter of 70 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is flat-globose conical and a little asymmetrical. The groundcolour of the apple is greenish yellow. The covercolour is purple. The covercolour covers approx. 100 % of the apple. It forms a a solid flush with strongly defined stripes/flushed and mottled/flushed, striped and mottled. There are many lenticells. The lenticells are large. The internal of the apple When you cut the apple from eye to stalk, you can see the following characteristics: The tube is funnel-shaped and the stamens are inserted at the base/in the middle of the eye. The green lines around the core end at the middle of the tube/end at the margin of the tube. The core is obloid. If you cut the apple horizontally, the core will look half open/open. The diameter of the core is approx. 41mm. The core fill out approx. 0,58 of the cross cut of the whole apple. The skin is medium thick and the fruit flesh has a greenish colour. The flesh is medium firm with a course texture. The flesh has a strong tendency to browning when cut.
