Hans Mathiesens History and usage Hans Mathiesen is originally from Denmark from Sealand from Halskov Hans Mathiesen is a seedling, formed 1873. Hans Mathiesen has been known in Denmark since 1910. The variety is or has been grown occasionally in Denmark. Hans Mathiesen was recommended for growing in Denmark latest in year 1957. Hans Mathiesen is or has been suitable for growing in orchards. The apple is a dessert apple. Hans Mathiesen grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup/Blomstergårdens Pomet. The tree The yield is medium. The cultivar is very robust towards apple scab, very robust towards apple mildew og very robust towards apple cancer. Hans Mathiesen got in the period of 2006-2009 evaluated under unsprayed conditions. Hans Mathiesen got scab attack on very few leaves, no scab attack on the apples, no fruit cancer on the branches, no shoots with mildew, no fruits with flyspeck/soothy blotch and no shoots with rosy apple aphid. The flower buds are mainly situated at older branches. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is dark pink, the blossom is very late/late. The variety is diploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 1/7. The quality and season of the apple The season of the apple is very late, to enjoy from January. Hans Mathiesen is mature for harvesting very late (first part of November)/late (last part of Oktober). The apple has an average attractive appearance. The flesh is medium juicy with a medium sweetness, strong acidity and none or a weak aroma. The apple has a medium/only a small tendency to be easily bruised. The overall flavour of Hans Mathiesen is evaluated as medium good. The apple stores for a long time. The external of the apple The apple is big/medium sized with a length of 66/68 mm and a diameter of 77/82 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is flat-globose conical and symmetric/a little asymmetrical. The groundcolour of the apple is greenish yellow/green. The covercolour is red/purple. The covercolour covers approx. 75 % of the apple. It forms a a solid flush with strongly defined stripes/a weakly defined flush with strongly defined stripes. The surface of the skin is smooth. There are only few/some lenticells. The lenticells are large. The colour of the lenticells appear light brown in relation to the groundcolour and lightbrown in relation to the covercolour. Eventual rings around the lenticells appear green in relation to the groundcolour and dark red/brown in relation to the covercolour. The stalk is short and thick, approx. 13 mm long and approx. 3,8 mm thick. The stalk is swollen. The stalk of the center fruit has often a fleshy knob in the cavity. The cavity is medium deep, without russet. The basin is shallow, and the eye is medium size/large and closed. The basin is a little ribbed. The internal of the apple When you cut the apple from eye to stalk, you can see the following characteristics: The tube is conical/funnel-shaped and the stamens are inserted in the middle/at the base of the eye.
