Hillesteds History and usage Hillested is originally from Denmark from Lolland from Hillested ved Maribo Hillested is a seedling, of Pilehaveæble x ? formed 1878. Hillested has been known in Denmark since 1913. The variety is or has been grown rarely or not at all in Denmark. The apple is a dessert apple. Hillested grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup. The tree The yield is high. The canopy density is fair. The cultivar is very robust towards apple scab, very robust towards apple mildew og robust towards apple cancer. Hillested got in the period of 2006-2009 evaluated under unsprayed conditions. Hillested got scab attack on very few leaves, scab attack on approx. 25% of the apples, fruit cancer on approx. 25% of the branches, mildew attack on very few shoots, flyspeck/soothy blotch on almost half of the fruits and no shoots with rosy apple aphid. The flower buds are mainly situated at young shoots. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is yellowish pink, the blossom is very late. The flowers are medium sized with petals, that are touching each other. The variety is diploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 1/34. The quality and season of the apple The season of the apple is medium early, to enjoy from September/Oktober. Hillested is mature for harvesting early to middle (first part of September). The apple has an average attractive appearance. The flesh is medium juicy with a medium sweetness, strong acidity and none or a weak aroma. The apple has only a small tendency to be easily bruised. The overall flavour of Hillested is evaluated as medium good. The external of the apple The apple is big to very big with a length of 77 mm and a diameter of 87 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is flat-globose conical and a little asymmetrical. There are cracks on the fruit. The groundcolour of the apple is greenish yellow. The covercolour is red. The covercolour covers approx. 25 % of the apple. It forms a flushed, striped and mottled. The surface of the skin is smooth. There are some lenticells. The lenticells are large. The stalk is long/very long and thick, approx. 23 mm long and approx. 3,3 mm thick. The cavity is deep, with some russet. The basin is medium deep/deep, and the eye is medium size/small and half open. The basin is a little ribbed. The internal of the apple When you cut the apple from eye to stalk, you can see the following characteristics: The tube is conical and the stamens are inserted at the base/in the middle of the eye. The green lines around the core end at the middle of the tube/end at the base of the tube, but don´t touch each other. The diameter of the core is approx. 31mm. The core fill out approx. 0,36 of the cross cut of the whole apple. The pips are medium sized and brown. The skin is medium thick and the fruit flesh has a white colour. The flesh is medium firm with a course texture. The flesh has no tendency to browning when cut.
